Dodge Viper RT/10 Roadster Sports Car - Dodge Viper First Generation
Dodge Viper first generation was tested in December 1989 and debuted in 1991 with two models. Then in 1992 Dodge Viper was released to the market as the soft roofed Dodge Viper RT/10 Roadster with its engine as the centerpiece. This Dodge Viper model was originally designed for a truck platform and based on the Chrysler LA design.
The Dodge Viper RT/10 Roadster's Engine
The engine weighed 711 lb (323 kg) and produced 400 hp (298 kW) at 4600 rpm and 465 ft·lbf (630 N·m) of torque at 3600 rpm. The Dodge Viper RT/10 Roadster's provided fuel economy at an EPA-rated 12 mpg (U.S.) (20 l/100 km) city and 20 mpg (U.S.) (12 l/100 km) highway. The Roadsters completed a quarter mile in 12.6 seconds and had a maximum speed of over 180 mph (290 km/h).
The Dodge Viper RT/10 Roadster's Body
The Dodge Viper RT/10 Roadster's body was a tubular steel frame with resin transfer molding (RTM) fiberglass panels. Some small bits of the suspension, (tie-rod ends and parts of the front wheel hubs) was sourced from the Dodge Dakota pickup. The Roadster had a front-mounted engine driving the rear wheels and had a curb weight of 3280 lb (1488 kg) and lacked all modern driver aids such as traction control or anti-lock brakes. Its large tires allowed the car to average close to 1 g in corners, which is comparable to modern sports cars.
